Should your Tie & Pocket Square Match?

A benefit of working on The Dirty Collar is the daily interaction we have with our customers, and their opinions on Men’s fashion. One of the most common questions we receive from our customers is "should my pocket square and tie match?"

In truth, there’s no “right” way of pairing your accessories, however there are some tricks to best optimize their value and purpose.

Here are our 4 tips when considering pairing your pocket square with your tie:

1) Don’t match, contrast!

Remember those boxed sets growing up that consisted of a matching tie and a pocket square? (Come on you do, everyone owned one at some time!)... Well those were fine—when you were 5. It’s time to put on your big boy pants, and become a little bit more creative. Pick a colour or pattern from your tie, and find a complimentary colour that blends everything together.

2) Match different materials

A simple way of pairing your accessories together is by experimenting with different textures and materials. If you're planning on wearing a silk tie, we suggest complementing it with a softer cotton pocket square. Try and avoid being repetitive in your accessory choices.

3) Solid colours can be simple yet bold

Solid pocket squares can be a great way to express different levels of boldness. For example, red is a very intense colour and showcases passion. Whereas blue is more calm and showcases a more relaxed look. Colours showcase emotions, find the colour that best expresses your personality and style.

4) When in doubt stick with a white cotton

Pure and classic. The white pocket square is an accessory-must have for all. It complements a wide variety of styles and even works by itself. When in doubt, a white cotton pocket square is the way to-go!

There are very few hard rules when you are confident and having fun.

Experiment with different styles, colours, and textures... and always dress DIRTY!
